I’ve lived in the Pacific Beach/La Jolla area since 1984, and I love this community. In those 40 years, I’ve seen a lot of changes—mostly good, but a few not-so-great ones too. However, this latest proposal is downright absurd.
A 239-foot, 22-story high-rise is in the works for the middle of Turquoise Street in Pacific Beach. Here’s the issue: there’s a 30-foot height limit in this area, and nothing has ever exceeded it. The only reason this proposal is even on the table is because of a loophole in state law regarding affordable housing, which the developer is exploiting to bypass local voter-approved height limits and planning guidelines.
The idea of this towering building in our small commercial district is just ridiculous. It would be completely out of place, put more strain on our infrastructure, and worsen the congestion in an already densely populated area. Not to mention, it would be a total eyesore.
For me, it’s a hard no.
